When you start a construction or engineering project, you need to ensure that you are using quality components. Pre-cast concrete components, for example, have a lot riding on them. They are expected to provide optimal performance for many years, so you really need to be sure that your supplier is the best you can find. How do you go about researching and vetting your pre-cast concrete supplier before you place your orders? Cobro Concrete explains the things you need to keep in mind, including certifications, facility audits, and a thorough pre-kickoff meeting
What to Consider When Vetting a Pre-Cast Supplier
When you speak to your pre-cast supplier for the first time, you are well within your rights to request and review their key documents to ensure that they meet industry standards and your project specifications. These include:
- Quality manuals and procedures
- Industry certifications, including proof of certification from the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) and other certifying institutions.
- Material certifications, such as mill certificates for reinforcing steel, cement, aggregates, and admixtures.
- Test reports.
- References and project portfolios.
You can also request a site visit so you can observe the supplier’s manufacturing and storage procedures. Your audit should cover:
- Material storage. Are raw materials kept in clean, dry areas, protected from contamination and corrosion?
- Batching plant. Inspect the condition and records of the batching equipment to ensure consistent measurements and proportions of materials.
- Check the condition and maintenance of moulds for accuracy and rigidity. Check that reinforcement cages and embedded items like lifting anchors are placed correctly and kept in excellent condition.
- Observe safety protocols on the site.
If you are happy to go forward with this supplier, insist on a detailed kickoff meeting. During the course of this meeting, you should:
- Define quality assurance roles and responsibilities, both for your team and your supplier’s.
- Draw up a communication plan. Define the chain of command and correct points of contact for handling issues, requests for information, and non-conformance queries.
- Review approval processes. Establish the timing and content of all necessary approvals, from shop drawings to product sign-offs.
- Agree on a schedule for regular QA/QC meetings and progress discussions.
